The Greedy Cobra and The King Of Frogs

Story in English -

There lived a King of Frogs, Gangadatta in a big well, which was his home. Unable to bear harassment by his relatives, the king abandoned his kingdom and came out of the well and thought,

“He who certainly retaliates
Him who harmed him in peril
And ridiculed him in misery
Is a man without rebirth.”\

Deeply lost in such thoughts, the frog king saw a big cobra entering the burrow of a tree and thought, “We must set an enemy to fight an enemy, set a strong person to crush another strong person. Their end will bring us happiness.”
With this aim in view, he went to the burrow and called the cobra, “Priyadarsana, please come out.”


The cobra, however, was careful. He thought, “Who is this fellow? He does not seem to be one of us. I don’t have any friends outside my circle. I will stay inside and find out who the caller is. He could be a magician or someone seeking my help in killing his enemy.”

Then, the cobra shouted from inside, “Who are you, sir?”
"I am Gangadatta, king of frogs. I have come to seek your help,” said the caller.

“I cannot believe you. Can there be friendship between a blade of dry grass and fire? Haven’t the learned said that he, who is natural prey to the predator never, even in a dream, gets closer to him? I cannot trust your words,” said the cobra.

“O Priyadarsana, what I tell you is true. You are my born enemy. But I have come to you seeking help to avenge my humiliation. The learned have said,

“When your life is under threat
When danger stares you in the face
It is better to bend before an enemy
And save life and property.”

“Who humiliated you,” asked the cobra.
“It is my relatives.”

“Where do you live? Is it a well or a pond or a tank?”
“It is a well with stone walls.”
“But I have no legs. How can I reach the well and kill your enemies?”
“Sir, please don’t say no. I will show you how to enter the well. There is a crevice in the wall that opens into the well. It’s a nice hiding place for you. Come, I will show you,” said Gangadatta, king of frogs.
The cobra then thought, “I have become old. Rarely can I get a frog to eat. This fellow has come to give me a new lease of life. I will go with him and have a daily feast of frogs.”
Addressing the king of frogs, the cobra said, “Let’s go.”
“But there is a condition,” said Gangadatta, “Priyadarsana, I will take you there and show you the place. But you should spare frogs that are close to me. You should eat only those I select as food for you.”

The cobra replied, “You are now my friend. I give you my word. I will eat only those marked by you as my food.”

The cobra then emerged from its burrow and accompanied the king of frogs to the well. The frog king showed him the crevice in the well and his relatives who deserved to be killed. The cobra happily settled in the crevice and finished in course of time all those frogs their king had marked for extermination.
Now, without frogs to eat, the cobra told the king, “I have destroyed all your enemies. Now show me prey for food. It is you who brought me here.”

Gangadatta told him, “You have done your job to help me. Now, it is time for you to leave this place.”
“How can I leave?” protested the cobra. “Someone else will occupy my place. So, I will not go, I will stay here only. You offer me one frog every day from your circle of relatives.”

Repenting for making friends with a natural enemy, Gangadatta thought it was better to offer the cobra one friend a day, remembering the saying that “he who befriends a stronger enemy invites certain death. A wise man does not lose all his wealth to save a paltry sum.”

Accordingly, the king of frogs began offering the cobra a frog a day. But the wicked cobra swallowed all the frogs. One day, it was the turn of Yamunadatta, son of the king of frogs. The king cried bitterly over the loss of his son. His wife then told him that there was no point in crying over the past and that he should immediately leave the place and look for ways to end the menace of the cobra.

As days passed, the cobra finished off the entire tribe of frogs with the exception of king Gangadatta. So, he asked Gangadatta, “Look, my friend, there is now no frog left for me to eat. I am very hungry. Show me where and how can sate my hunger.”

The king replied, “Priyadarsana, don’t worry about food as long as I am your friend. You get me out of this well. I will go and look for wells full of frogs. I will tempt them to come here and you can have your fill.”

The cobra said, “You are like a brother to me, Gangadatta. I can’t kill you. But if you bring me food, you will be as good as my father. I will get you out of this well.” Thus, the king came out and disappeared. The cobra was eagerly waiting for the king to bring him food. When Gangadatta failed to turn up even after a long time, the cobra sought the help of a chameleon.

“My friend, you know Gangadatta very well. Please go to him and tell him that it does not matter if he cannot bring me a frog. Let him come. I cannot live without such a trusted friend.”
The chameleon carried the message of the cobra to the king of frogs and told him, “Your friend Priyadarsana is eagerly looking for you to return.”

Gangadatta told him, “Excuse me sir, who can trust a hungry man. You may please go.”

Moral of the Story - Natural enemies can never be friends. Do not try, to become friend of a greedy person.

Story in Hindi -

एक समय की बात है, मेंढकों का राजा, गंगादत्ता एक बड़े से कुएं में रहता था, जो उसका घेर भी था. अपने घेरवालों से अपमान जनिक बातें सुन केर वो अपना राज्य छोड़ कर, कुएं में रहने लगा.        

जब  मेंढक राज अपने सोच में खोया हुआ था, उसी समय उसने एक बड़े से सांप (कोबरा) को पेड़ के तने में जाते हुए देखा और सोचने लगा, "हमें दुश्मन से लड़ने के लिए दुश्मन का साथ ही लेना चाहिए. ताकतवर आदमी ही ताकतवर से लड़ सकता है. दुश्मन का नास ही मेरे लिए ख़ुशी ला सकता है."

अपने आगे लक्ष्य को देख कर, वो पेड़ के तने के पास गया और कोबरा को बुलाया, "प्रियादर्सना, कृपया बहार आयें".

 कोबरा, सावधान था, उसने सोचा," यह कौन मुझे आवाज़ दे रहा है? यह मेरी जाती के तो नहीं है. और मैं अपनी जाती के बाहर किसीसे दोस्ती नहीं करता. मैं अपने घर के अंदर ही रहता हूँ और पता लगता हूँ की यह बुलाने वाला कौन है. यह कोई जादूगर हो सकता है या कोई जो मेरी मदद चाहता हो अपने दुश्मन को ख़तम करने के लिए".

तब, कोबरा अंदर से ही चिल्ला कर बोला, " तुम कौन हो?"

" मैं गंगादत्ता हूँ, मेंढकों का राजा, आपसे मदद लेने आया हूँ, " उसने जवाब दिया.

"मैं तुम पैर बिस्वास नहीं करता. क्या कभी सुखी घास और आग कर बीच मैं दोस्ती हो सकती है? क्या तुमने सुना नहीं है की, शिकार और शिकारी कभी दोस्त नहीं बन सकते हैं? मैं तुम पर बिस्वास नहीं कर सकता हूँ, " कोबरा बोला.

" हे प्रियादर्सना, जो मैं तुम्हें बोल रहा हूँ वो सत्य है. तुम मेरे जनम से दुश्मन हो. पर मैं तुम्हारे पास मदद ले लिए आया हूँ , अपनी बय्जती का बदला लेने के लिए. किसी ने सच कहा है,

"जब तुम्हारी ज़िन्दगी पर बन आती है
मुसीबत तुम्हें सामने से देखती है
अपने दुश्मन के हिसाब से काम करना बेहतर है
और अपनी ज़िन्दगी और घर बचा सकते हैं."
"तुम्हारी किसने बेज्जती की है, "कोबरा ने पूछा.

 " वो मेरे रिश्तेदार हैं."

" तुम कहाँ रहते हो? वह एक कुयाँ है या तालाब है?"

"वो एक कुयाँ है और पत्थर की दीवारें हैं उसकी."
"पर मेरे पास पैर नहीं हैं. मैं कैसे उस कुएं के पास पहुँच कर तुम्हारे दुश्मन को मार सकता हूँ?'

"आप चिंता मत करिए. मुझे ना मत बोलिए. मैं आपको अंदर जाने का रास्ता दिखूंगा. उस कुएं के दिवार पर एक दरार है. वो बिलकुल सही जगह है आपके छुपने के लिए. आएया, मैं आपको दिखता हूँ, " मेंढक राज ने बोला.

तब कोबरा सोचा, "अब मैं बूढ़ा हो गया हूँ. बहुत मुश्किल से अब मुझे मेंढक खाने को मिलता है. मुझे इसके साथ जाना चाहिए और प्रतिदिन मेंढक का भोजन करना चाहिए.

फिर मेंढक राज को कोबरा ने कहाँ, "ठीक है, चलो".
"पैर एक शर्त है," गंगादत्त बोला, "प्रियदर्शना, मैं आपको वहां ले जाऊँगा और जगह दिखा दूंगा. पर आपको उन मेंढक को छोड़ देना होगा जो मेरे करीब हैं. केवल उनको ही खाहोगे जिन्हें मैं बोलूँगा."

 कोबरा ने जबाब दिया, " अब तुम मेरे दोस्त हो. मैं तुम्हें अपनी जबान देता हूँ. मैं केवल उन्हें खाऊँगा जिन्हें तुम बोलोगे".

तब कोबरा अपने बिल से निकला और मेंढक राज के पीछे पीछे कुएं तक गया. मेंढक राज उसको कुएं को वोह दरार दिखा दिया जहाँ कोबरा आराम से छुप केर बैठ सकता था. और उन रिश्तेदारों को भी दिखाया, जिन्हें वोह मरना चाहता था.कोबरा उस दरार में छुप कर बैठ गया और समय से पहले उन सारे मेंढक को खा गया, जिन्हें उनके राजा ने बताया था. अब, जब सारे मेंढक खत्तम हो गए, तो कोबरा मेंढक राज को बोला, "मैंने तुम्हारे सारे दुश्मन को खत्तम कर दिया है. अब मुझे नया शिकार दिखायो. तुम्ही मुझे यहाँ लाये हो."

गंगादत्त बोला, "आपने अपना काम करके मुझे मदद किया है. अब, यह समय है की आप इस जगह को छोड़ कर चले जायें." "मैं यहाँ से कैसे जा सकता हूँ?" कोबरा ने इनकार किया. " मेरी जगह में कोई और आ जायेगा. मैं यहीं रहूँगा. तुम मुझे प्रतिदिन एक मेंढक दो भोजन के लिए अपने रिश्तेदारों से."

पछताते हुए की अपने दुश्मन से दोस्ती करके गंगादत्त ने गलत किया, गंगादत्त सोचने लगा की बेहतर यही होगा की प्रतिदिन मैं अपने एक रिश्तेदार को दे दूं.

फिर, मेंढक राज प्रतिदिन एक मेंढक, कोबरा देने लगा. पैर, दुष्ट कोबरा सारे मेंढक को निगल गया. फिर एक दिन, यामुनादात्ता की बारी थी, मेंढक राज के पुत्र की बारी थी. राजा अपने बेटे की मृत्यु पर बहुत रोया. उसकी पत्नी ने उससे कहा की अब रोने का कोई फ़ायदा नहीं है और यह बोला की उसे वोह जगह छोड़ कर चले जाना चाहिए, तभी उस कोबरा के आंतक का अंत हो सकता है.

जैसे दिन गुजरा, कोबरा मेंढक राजके पुरे काबिले का खात्मा कर दिया, अब केवल राजा गंगादत्त बच गया था. इसलिए, वो गंगादत्त से बोला, " देखो दोस्त, अब यहाँ कोई मेंढक नहीं बचा है मेरे खाने के लिए. मुझे बहुत भूक लगी है. मुझे बताओ अब मैं क्या खाऊन जिससे मेरी भूक मिट सके."


राजा बोला, "प्रियदर्शना, आप खाने की चिंता मत करो जब तक मैं आपका दोस्त हूँ. आप मुझे इस कुएं से निकलने में मदद करो. मैं जा कर ऐसा कुयाँ देखता हूँ, जिसमें सारे मेंढक भरे हुए होंगे. मैं उस लोगों को इस कुएं के पास आने के लिए बोलूँगा और फिर तुम अपना पेट भर लेना."



कोबरा बोला, "तुम मेरे भाई जैसे हो, गंगादत्त. मैं तुम्हें मार नहीं सकता. पर अगर तुम मेरे लिए खाना ला सकोगे तो तुम मेरे पिता जैसे बन जायोगे. मैं तुम्हें इस कुएं से निकलने मैं मदद करूंगा." इस तरह राजा उस कुएं से बहार निकल कर गायब हो गया. जब बहुत देर तक गंगादत्त नहीं आया, तो कोबरा एक chameleon से मदद माँगा.

" मेरे दोस्त, तुम गंगादत्त को तो जानते ही हो. कृपया उसके पास जाओ और उसको बोलो अगर वोह मेरे लिए मेंढक नहीं ला सकता है तो कोई बात नहीं, वोह खुद वापस आ जाये. मैं इतने आच्छे दोस्त के बिना नहीं रह सकता हूँ."

chameleon कोबरा का सन्देश ले कर राजा गंगादत्त के पास पहुंचा और बोला, " तुम्हारा दोस्त प्रियदर्शना उम्हरे लौटने का इंतज़ार कर रहा है. "

गंगादत्त बोला, "भूखे आदमी का कौन भरोसा कर सकता है. तुम कृपया यहाँ से जाओ."

कहानी का सन्देश- ऐसे लोगो से दोस्ती मत करो, जो तुमसे केवल अपना मतलब निकल न चाहते हैं."

The Monkey and Crocodile (Bandar aur magarmach)

• Story in English - 

There lived a monkey named "Raktamukha" on a blackberry tree near the coast. That tree was always full of fruits. One day a crocodile named Karalamukha came out of the waters and loitering on the sands came to the tree.
Seeing the crocodile, the monkey said, “O crocodile, you are my guest. I will feed you with these delicious blackberries. Enjoy the fare. The learned have said,

“That man is blessed who hosts
A lover or an enemy or a fool.
Angels will desert the home
That fails to host a guest.”

The monkey then gave the crocodile a lot of berries. After he had his fill, the crocodile went home. Thereafter, it became a habit of the crocodile to daily visit Monkey, enjoy the fruit he offered, spend time with him discussing the world and then go home.
One day, the crocodile's wife asked her husband, “Where do you get this fruit, they are so sweet. I have never tasted such mouth-watering fruit.”
“I have a close friend, a monkey, who gives me the fruit every day,” said the husband.
“If the fruit are so sweet, the heart of your friend who eats them everyday must be as delicious as the fruit. Please get his heart for me, if you have love left for me. I will always be young and immortal if I eat that fruit,” said the wife.
Crocodile said - “My dear, it is improper for you to speak like that. I have accepted him as my brother. It is not possible for me to kill such a host".


Angry, the wife said, “You have never defied my word. It must be a female monkey who is your friend. That’s why you are spending so much time with him every day. I have now understood you thoroughly. Your heart is full of that monkey. You are a cheat.”
The Crocodile, wanting to pacify his wife, said, ““My dear, why are you angry? I am your most obedient servant and ready to carry out your order at any time.”
“No, she is dear to you. If you really love me, why don’t you kill her and get me her heart. If you don’t get it, I will fast and die,” threatened the wife.
Worried, the crocodile went to the monkey. Seeing that the crocodile was late for his daily meeting, The Monkey said, “You are late, my friend and do not seem to be cheerful. What’s the matter?”

Crocodile replied - “O my friend, how can I tell you what happened at home. My wife is very angry. She told me that I am an ungrateful friend and that every day I eat the fruit you offer but never had the courtesy of inviting you home. You have no redemption; she told me and warned me that if I did not bring you home, I would see her only in the other world. These arguments with her have delayed me. Please come with me. My wife has decorated the house fit to receive you. She has hung welcome buntings at the entrance. She is eagerly waiting for me to bring you home.”

The monkey said, “Your wife has said the proper thing. You should leave a man who loves you for your wealth like the spider attracts his prey. She might as well have quoted the elders saying,

“Where there is no give and take
Where there is no exchange of secrets
And of hospitality either
There is no true friendship.” 

“There is a problem, however. We are all land animals. You live in water. It may not be possible for me to accept your kind invitation. I advise you to bring her here,” said the monkey.
“It’s really no problem,” said the crocodile. “Our house is on a sandbank. It’s a beautiful place. Sit on my back. I will carry you.”


The monkey happily sat on the back of the crocodile and the journey began. As the crocodile was entering deep waters, the monkey got scared and told the crocodile to go slowly.

Thinking that the monkey was his prisoner now, the crocodile told Monkey, “It is now safe to tell you our plan. My wife wanted me to create trust in you first and persuade you to accept our invitation and then kill you so that we may have the good fortune of feasting on your heart.”

With great presence of mind, the monkey said, “My friend, if this is what you and your wife wanted, why didn’t you tell me in the beginning itself? My heart is safely stored in the burrow of the tree. What is the use of your taking me home without my heart? Let us go back. There is nothing happier for me than giving my heart to your wife.” Happily, the crocodile turned back and brought the monkey to the shore.
The monkey at once leaped to the top of the blackberry tree and thought, “We should not trust an untrustworthy person, even if we did, it should not be total. Such trust will destroy us completely. This is a rebirth for me.”

The crocodile was in a hurry and asked the monkey, “What is the delay? Get you heart. My wife will be very happy.”

The monkey angrily told him, “You idiot, have you seen anyone who has two hearts? You are ungrateful. Get out of my sight and never come this way again."

Moral of the Story- Never trust an Untrustworthy person, even if you did, it should not be total. Such trust can destroy us completely. Even in problem, think coolly to come out of the problem.

•  Story in Hindi - 

एक समय की बात है, एक पेड़ पर एक बन्दर रहता था. वह पेड़ हमेशा फलों से भरा हुआ रहता था. एक दिन, एक मगरमच्छ वहां से गुजरा.

मगरमच्छ को देख केर बन्दर बोला " हे मगर, आप मेरे अतिथि हो . आपको भोजन देना मेरा फ़र्ज़ बनता है . आप यह फल खाएं. ऐसा बोल केर बन्दर ने फल नीचे मगर के पास फैंका.

बन्दर ने मगर को काफी सारे फल खाने को दिये. पेट भरने के बाद, मगर अपने घर वापस आ गया. अब मगरमच्छ, बन्दर के पास प्रतिदिन आने लगा, मज़े से बन्दर के दिये हुए फल खाता, कुछ समय बिताता, बातें करता और फिर घर जाता .

एक दिन, मगरमच्छ की पत्नी ने पूछा, " तुम यह सारे फल कहाँ से लाये हो, यह फल कितने मीठे हैं.

मगरमच्छ बोला, " मेरा एक बहुत ही करीबी दोस्त है, जो मुझे प्रतिदिन फल देता है.
तो मगर की पत्नी बोली, " जब फल इतने मीठे हैं, तो तुम्हारा दोस्त जो इन फलूं को प्रतिदिन खाता है, उसका कलेजा कितना मीठा होगा. अगर तुम मुझसे प्यार करते हो, तो मुझे उसका कलेजा ला केर दो, जिसे खा कर मैं और ताकत वाली बन जाऊंगी .

मगरमच्छ बोला, " प्रिये, यह तुमने गलत बात बोल दिया है . मैं उसको अपने भाई जैसा मानता हूँ. यह बहुत ही गलत होगा की मैं अपने दोस्त को मार दूं.

मगरमच्छ की पत्नी गुस्से मैं बोली, "तुमने मेरी बात मानने से कभी इनकार नहीं किया है. वो जरूर  मादा बन्दर होगी, जो तुम्हारी दोस्त है. इसलिए तुम वहां ज्यादा समय वय्तित करते हो. तुम मुझे धोखा दे रहे हो.

मगरमच्छ अपनी पत्नी को समझाते हुए बोला, " प्रिये, तुम व्यर्थ में नाराज़ हो रही हो. में तुम्हारा आज्ञाकारी हूँ और तुम्हारी इच्छा पूरी करने के लिए हमेशा त्यार रहता हूँ."

" नहीं, वो तुम्हें ज्यादा पसंद है. अगर तुम सही में मुझे प्यार करते हो, तुम उसे मार के उसका कलेजा ला कर दो. नहीं तो मैं कुछ नहीं खाऊंगी" उसकी पत्नी ने कहा.

चिंतित मगरमच्छ बन्दर के पास पहुंचा. जब बन्दर ने देखा की मगरमच्छ देर से पहुंचा है, तो बन्दर बोला, "मेरे दोस्त, आज तुम देर से आये हो, और तुम खुश भी नहीं दीख रहे हो. क्या बात है?

मगरमच्छ बोला - "ये मेरे दोस्त, मैं तुम्हें कैसे बताऊँ मेरे घर मैं क्या हुआ है. मेरी पत्नी मुझसे बहुत नाराज़ है. उसने मुझसे कहा की मैं अच्छा दोस्त नहीं हूँ, मैं प्रतिदिन तुम्हारे दिये हुए फल खाता हूँ, पर कभी भी तुम्हें घर नहीं बुलाया. मेरी पत्नी ने मुझे बोला है की अगर मैं तुम्हें घर ले कर नहीं आया, तो वो मुझे दूसरी दुनिया में ही मिलेगी. यही सारी बातों में मुझे देर हो गया. कृपया, तुम मेरे साथ चलो. मेरी पत्नी ने घर आपको भाए, ऐसा सजाया है. उसने आपकी स्वागत के लिए मुख्य द्वार भी सजाया है. वोह आपके आने का बेसब्री से इंतज़ार कर रही है. "

बन्दर बोला - " अगर भाभी, ऐसा चाहती हैं तो ठीक है मैं आपके साथ जरूर चलूँगा. ( ऐसे लोगों का साथ कभी भी नहीं रखना चाहिए जो पैसे की तरफ खीच जाते हैं जैसे मकड़ी अपने शिकार को खिचता है.)

" लेकिन एक मुश्किल है, मैं ज़मीन पर रहने वाला प्राणी हूँ. मैं आपका नौता नहीं स्वीकार कर सकता. आप अगर भाभी को ही यहाँ ले आयें तो सही रहेगा, " बन्दर बोला.
" इसमें कोई दिक्कत नहीं है" मगरमच्छ बोला. " हमारा घर पानी के किनारे है. वोह बहुत ही सुंदर जगह है. मेरे पीठ पर बैठो मैं आपको ले चलता हूँ."

बन्दर ख़ुशी ख़ुशी मगरमच्छ के पीठ पर बैठ गया और यात्रा शुरु हुई. जब मगरमच्छ गहरे पानी मैं नीचे जाने लगा, तब बन्दर डर गया और मगरमच्छ को बोला धीरे चलने के लिए.

मगरमच्छ ने सोचा की बन्दर तो अब उसका कैदी है, इसलिए वो बन्दर को बोला, "अब मैं तुम्हें बता सकता हूँ, मेरी पत्नी ने बोला की मैं तुम्हारे अंदर बिश्वास जगाऊँ और फिर तुम्हें मार कर तुम्हारा कलेजा ले जा कर उसको दूं.

बुद्धि का प्रोयोग करके, बन्दर ने सोचा की अगर वो  मगरमच्छ को किंनारे तक जाने के लिए राज़ी करले तो उसकी जान बच सकती है. ऐसा सोच कर बन्दर मगरमच्छ को बोला, " मेरे दोस्त, अगेर आप और आपकी पत्नी ऐसा ही चाहते हैं तो आपको पहले ही बताना चाहिये था. मैं तो अपना कलेजा पेड़ पर ही रखता हूँ, अब मुझे बिना कलेजे के ले जा कर क्या करोगे. चलो वापस कहते हैं और कलेजा लेकर फिर भाभीजी के पास चलते हैं". मगरमच्छ को भी बात सही लगी, और वोह ख़ुशी ख़ुशी वापस चल दिये. वापस पहुँचने पर बन्दर जल्दी से पेड़ पर चढ़ गया और सोचने लगा, " हमें किसी भी लोगों पर बिश्वास नहीं करना चाहिए तो बिश्वास के योग्य नहीं है. ऐसा बिश्वास हमें बर्बाद कर देता है. यह मेरा दूसरा जनम है".

मगरमच्छ जल्दी में था और बन्दर को बोला, " समय क्यूँ लग रहा है? अपना कलेजा लो और चलो. मेरी पत्नी खुश हो जाएगी.

बन्दर ने गुस्से में कहा, " बेबकूफ, तुमने किसी को देखा है, जिसके पास २ कलेजा हो? तुम खुदगर्ज हो. मेरी नज़रों के सामने से चले जाओ और फिर कभी इधर मत आना.

उपदेस - कभी भी ऐसे इंसान पर बिश्वास ना करो, जो बिश्वास के योग्य नहीं है, और करना भी पड़े, तो पूरी तरह ना करो, वो तुम्हें पूरी तरह से बर्बाद कर सकते हैं. मुसीबत के समय, ठन्डे दिमाग से उपाय ढूंढना चाहिए.
